The Children's Service Handbook for Sunday Schools, Christian Bands, &c.

Author: Thomas Davies
Publisher: Elliott Stock
Publish Date: 1886

We are not able to express so favorable an opinion of this production as we hoped to have done when we first saw it. We have no liking for a liturgy. Those who find such a help a necessity will prize the book, for the author here gives six distinct services with prayers and responses, and a chant, a hymn and an anthem for each. There are also twenty-four sketches of Bible characters with outline addresses and a synopsis of gospel truths. The author is more successful with his homiletics than with the music, which not bearing any author's name, we presume to be for the most part original. Sunday school teachers though not adopting the book as a whole will find some valuable assistance in the conduct of special services.
